You should apply this application before the time when the period of stay come to an end.
The fee for this application against the immigration office is 4000yen(revenue stamp)

在留外国人が定められた「在留期間」を超えて現在の「在留資格」に属する活動を維持しようとする場合や現在の身分又は地位をそのまま維持していこうとする場合には「在留期間の更新」の手続きをしなければなりません。しないと不法残留として「退去強制」の対象となり罰金や刑罰が下されます。
